Simple Sourdough Bread Recipe For Beginners
You think its hard to make sourdough bread? You’ve seen people make it on YouTube or in blogs and it looks complicated? Maybe you’ve tasted it and think it has an awesome taste? Well, it has!! ?
And guess what, it doesn’t have to be that hard! This is the recipe we used for our first sourdough bread, and it turned out so much better than expected.
One of the best parts about this bread, expect from the taste and health benefits, is how easy it is to make. All you need is an active sourdough starter, flour, water, and salt. Who would have known it would be this easy??
Sourdough bread is known to be one of the oldest ways to ferment grain and people have been making bread like this for years.
In this recipe, I’ve written a short overview of how to make it, but I recommend you to check out our YouTube video on how we actually did it! There are also some key takeaways in there that can be helpful ?
Health benefits
You might think making bread is not really in FuelChef’s repertoire, and in a way you are right. BUT there is a big BUT, even when on a diet such as RP you are allowed to eat some carbs. We both believe consuming foods that are healthy and sourdough bread is known to have several great benefits:
- Sourdough bread is more nutritious than “traditional” bread because it has higher mineral absorption.
- The bread has lactic bacteria than can release antioxidants during the fermentation process.
- The sourdough has probiotics that make it easier for the body to digest, and because of the probiotics, it will improve your gut health. Also, the sourdough actually degrades the gluten in the bread, making it easier to digest.
- Further, there are also indications that sourdough bread might have a positive impact on insulin and blood sugar levels. I don’t think I’ll have to explain why this alone makes it a better bread choice while on a diet!
What you need
- 100g Active sourdough starter
- 760g Bread Flour
- 190g Whole-Grain Wheat Flour
- 700g Water
- 22g Salt
How to do it
Below is a short and aggregated description of how to make sourdough bread.
- First, you need an active sourdough starter, you can read our post on how we did it.
- Then, add the starter, all the flour, salt, and water in a bowl and mix it together.
- Put a wet kitchen towel over the bowl and leave it on the bench or in a pantry until the next morning.
- The next morning the dough should have doubled in size.
- Divide your dough into two pieces and shape the dough.
- Put the doughs in pre-floured bannetons or something else that will shape the bread, wrap them in plastic bags, and put them in the fridge for 1 hour.
Ps. we have saved the plastic bags so we can use them next time we make bread. - Preheat your own, with the dutch oven inside at 250ºC/500ºC
- After 1 hour, take out the bread from the refrigerator, shape them, score them, and put them in the dutch oven and then in the oven.
- After 20 min remove the lid, reduce the temperature to 230ºC/450ºC
- Leave it for 25-30 min.
- Remove them from the oven and let them rest.
As you can see, making sourdough bread doesn’t have to be hard!!
